The crochet shawl is Lost in Time, a free pattern from Mijo Crochet, made with Fiesta Yarns Linnette, a sadly discontinued hand-dyed fingering weight cotton/linen blend. I didn’t have any newly made shawls ready for blocking, so I chose a couple of shawls from my collection that looked like they were due for a refresh. Hopefully, you’ll be inspired to block your own shawls and move them out of the UFO pile! The Shawls I’ll also show you the equipment I use and tell you where you can make do with items you already have at home. In this article, I’ll show you my process for blocking both a knit shawl and a crochet shawl. Yes, blocking takes some space, but it need not take a lot of time if you have some simple equipment. I’ve always blocked my projects as soon as the knitting is done, and I don’t think of blocking as an onerous chore. While I enjoyed reading your comments, I was surprised by how many readers reported that they had one (or more!) shawls just waiting to be blocked. A little while back, I invited you to join me in an assessment of our unfinished projects. In Vicious Spirits, Kat Cho delivers another beguiling and addictive read full of otherworldly dangers and romance. In usual fashion, Somin may have a thing or two to say about that. With few options remaining, Junu has an idea but it might require the ultimate sacrifice. The only way to repair the breach is to find the missing fox bead or for Miyoung to pay with her life. The loss of Miyoung's fox bead has caused a tear between the world of the living and the world of the dead, and ghosts are suddenly flooding the streets of Seoul. For those who crave vampire lite, the novel features likable heroines and comical scenarios. How long will it take for Ivy to confess that she and her pals are vampires? Long enough for Olive to want to stand by her, because blood is thicker than water (to which her twin responds, And better tasting, too!). In the inevitable "Parent Trap"esque move, they decide to change places, but just at school. And indeed she has: when she spies the emerald ring on Olivia's finger, identical to the one Ivy wears around her neck, the two figure out that they are twins, adopted at the age of one by different parents. Charlotte, the snooty self-appointed cheerleading captain, befriends Olivia, as does ultra Goth Ivy, who feels strongly that she has met the new girl before. Perky Olivia, who hopes to join the cheerleading squad, notices an abundance of white-faced, black-clad goths in her pretty pink dress, she looks like a lollipop in a graveyard. Launching the My Sister the Vampire series, this predictable if cute caper opens on Olivia's first day of eighth grade at a new school. Courtesy of Higher Pictures Generation.Īfter hearing the horrifying news about the attack on Salman Rushdie earlier today, I turned to the first book of his I’d read-or rather, the book he read, on audiocassette, to my family on long car journeys. But they are a branch of a noble family, and between initial respect for their pedigree, pity for their misfortunes, and later on, sheer terror of their ruthless thievery, the Doones have become an established fact on Exmoor. The Doone family is a notorious family of outlaws. Lorna Doone’s main character is a hearty English farmer, John Ridd by name, who writes the book himself to vindicate the character of his parish-or something like that-and as the word Romance in the title would suggest (also the obvious fact that Lorna, if a name at all-I did have my doubts at the beginning-is clearly a girls’ name), the plot centers around his love for one Lorna Doone. Jump to the bottom if you just want the brief conclusion, or read on for all the details! I doubt it would hold the interest of a younger reader. It’s also a fairly slow-paced book, with a plot that only has rare cliff-hanger moments. Lorna Doone is, I think, about the length of Dicken’s David Copperfield or Our Mutual Friend a longish book, but not to be compared to War and Peace or The Count of Monte Cristo. Set in the late seventeenth century and early eighteenth, in wild, hilly Exmoor, England (not that I know anything about Exmoor, but that’s the impression I got), Lorna Doone: A Romance of Exmoor weaves together history, legend, and fiction. |
